We used linear splines to fit the age profile, which has a sigmoid functional shape. This enables us not to use non-linear regressions, which can be sometimes cumbersome to estimate (due to convergence and the choice of initial conditions). The samples for Sweden do not have enough observations for the youngest population and therefore the simulations are not presented for this age group. 43
